BIG EAST ROSTER UPDATE: GEORGETOWN

October 20, 2006

According to the Washington Post (scroll down on article), Georgetown sophomore guard Josh Thornton has left the program. Thornton played in just six games last season and likely saw the writing on the wall that leaving now could allow him to find a home for more playing time and still have most of 2 1/2 seasons of eligibility left.

Projected 2007-2008 Roster:

Seniors: Jeff Green (F), Roy Hibbert (C), Jon Wallace (PG), Tyler Crawford (G), Pat Ewing Jr (F)
Juniors: Jesse Sapp (G) Marc Edgerson (SF), Octavious Spann (SF)
Sophomores: Jeremiah Rivers (PG), Dajuan Summers (F), Vernon Macklin (PF)
Freshmen: Austin Freeman (SG), Chris Wright (PG), Omar Wattad (F)

Here is the full test from the Washington Post on Thornton's decision to leave:
Guard Josh Thornton has left the Georgetown program, Coach John Thompson III said yesterday. Thornton played in six games last season as a freshman, averaging 1.7 points and 0.5 rebounds.

"Josh has made a decision to leave for personal reasons," Thompson said. "We respect his decision, appreciate the contributions he made while he was here and wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

Jason Clark is another talented 2008 recruit off the board as the versatile 2008 guard prospect chose to stay close to home and attend Georgetown. The Hoyas are cleaning up in the loaded DC area with recent commitments from Chris Wright (St. John's College Prep and Boo Williams AAU), Chris Braswell (DeMatha HS and Triple Threat AAU), and Clark (Bishop O'Connell and Bethesda Magic AAU) in the last week. They of course join Braswell's high school teammate Austin Freeman (DC Assault) to show the wide range of Georgetown's local recruiting power as they are sampling from just about each of the local major AAU programs (anyone fro Team Melo ready?). Hats off to John Thompson III and chief recruiter Kevin Broadus for bring the Hoyas back into the national picture.

All signs point to continued success and now the Hoyas can continue to evaluate and fine-tune their focus on who they want. On paper, it looks like one scholarship is open, but 2008-2009 is a long way off...so, expect them to keep making waves on the recruiting scene.

We will continue to follw the Hoyas on the recruiting trail.

Not much is known on Wattad, a Sciene Hill HS senior that attends school in Johnson City, TN. Media reports paint Wattad as a versatile forward that should fit well in the Georgetown system. He has the ability to knock down shots and has definitely displayed a desire to be part of the Georgetown program. Wattad is the thirs 2007 Georgetown commit, joining the excellent guard duo of Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. On paper, the Hoyas have 15 players committed to 13 scholarships for the 2007 season, so, we will probably be watching their roster once this season is completed. Obviously, Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert will have NBA options at season's end.

Speaking of Georgetown and commitments, the Hoyas have also begun their 2008 recruiting with a BIG bang as Chris Braswell committed to the Hoyas (Washington Post article (scroll down). Braswell is one of the nation's top 2008 prospects. The 6'10 junior averaged 7.7 PPG last season at powerful DeMatha, where he is teammate of 2007 Georgetown commit Austin Freeman. The Hoyas are also widely expected to land another area player in the near future, Jason Clark, a guard from Bishop O'Connell. We will keep you posted.

BIG EAST RECRUITING UPDATE: GEORGETOWN

October 11, 2006

VERBAL COMMITMENT ALERT: Chris Wright, (PG) St. John's College Prep

Projected 2007-2008 Roster:

Seniors: Jeff Green (F), Roy Hibbert (C), Jon Wallace (PG), Tyler Crawford (G), Pat Ewing Jr (F)
Juniors: Jesse Sapp (G), Josh Thornton (G), Marc Edgerson (SF), Octavious Spann (SF)
Sophomores: Jeremiah Rivers (PG), Dajuan Summers (F), Vernon Macklin (PF)
Freshmen: Austin Freeman (SG), Chris Wright (PG)

With Pittsburgh, North Carolina St and Georgetown awaiting anxiously the last few days to hear of Chris Wright's decision, it was John Thompson III getting the good news yesterday as Wright Commits to Hoyas (Washington Times).

With the possibility of either Jeff Green and/or Roy Hibbert turning pro after this coming season, the Hoya staff has continued to recruit the class of 2007 despite not having a scholarship readily available. Elite prospects like Chris Wright (PG), JJ Hickson (PF), Anthony Randolph (PF) and Anthony McClain (C) have been high on the Hoya radar this summer. Yesterday, that work paid off with the commitment of Chris Wright to the Hoya program. Wright is a point guard who can also score in bunches. However, he is an extremely intelligent player on and off the court and has a very good understanding of the game, key trait for a point guard. Playing in the structured Boo Williams AAU program should help him adapt to the structured Georgetown system very well. Wright is an excellent shooter and passer that never seems to be forcing his action. With Austin Freeman already committed, the Georgetown backcourt looks to be loaded in the future.

Legendary DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, MD has not been very kind to the Gerogetown Hoyas over the years, but that changed in a big way last November when Austin Freeman pledged for the Hoyas. Freeman is an electrric scoring wing guard who also runs with the DC Assault and made the rest of the schools that recruit the DC-area take notice that John Thompson has the Hoyas back in action and with Kevin Broadus recruiting the local area, Georgetown is going to be a force. Freeman continued his assault on the class of 2007 rankings and follows up the class of Vernon Macklin and Dajuan Summers with another elite prospect coming to the Hoyas. The program is once again a force on the court and in the recruiting battles. For 2008, they hope to land an early commitment from another top DeMatha prospect, PF Chris Braswell. Another prospect who has the Hoyas very high on his list is Bishop O'Connell shooting guard Jason Clark.

Right now, the Hoyas are the program that the players in the talent rich DC/NoVa area want to play for. They have set their sights very high in the recruiting game and have plenty of interest back from some of the big time talent in 2007 and 2008. It definitely looks like a great time to be around the Hoya program in the Big East!
