It was not that big of a surprise that Greg Monroe choose Georgetown, but the timing of it caught many off guard as Monroe Commits to Georgetown (Times-Picayune) prior to finishing his five official visits. Georgetown and LSU where the only schools he took official visits to and he has canceled trips to Duke, UConn and Texas.

Georgetown is HOT right now. John Thompson III has been cleaning up on the top prospects in the local area, which has been LOADED with prospects the last couple years and now he goes outside and lands the nation's #1 prospect in the class of 2008 by getting the coveted commitment from Louisiana big man Greg Monroe. The 6'10 Monroe is smooth on the floor with an impressive array of skills for a 6'10 player. It is no secret he has NBA written all over him and the new NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement is the only thing keeping him out of the NBA draft for a year (at least). Monroe is a lefty that handles and passes the ball impressively and is only beginning to scratch the surface of his VAST potential as he is younger than most of his high school peers in the class of 2008.

Coming off the 2007 class where the Hoyas landed a pair of McDonald's All-Americans (Chris Wright and Austin Freeman) from the local area, they got off to a quick start in 2008 by securing commitments from local standouts Henry Sims, Chris Braswell and Jason Clark. Monroe is obviously the big prize and securing a trio of frontcourt recruits like Sims and Braswell to go with Monroe is one of the most impressive recruiting jobs done in a long time, especially when you add the guard duo of Wright and Freeman. There are a few questions around Braswell who left DeMatha High for Hargrave Military Academy this fall in hopes of tightening up his academics. He was MIA a lot of the season last year at DeMatha and his summer play was spotty on the AAU circuit. However, he also has a lot of ability and can play inside and out effectively for a player his size. He has a strong frame which should make him effective in the Big East. Sims is not nearly as polished as Braswell, but Sims will give you a super effort every time on the floor. He is a long and lean athlete in the post that will battle in the boards and block shots on the defensive end. He will continue to develop on offense and will be a very good college player as he continues to improve. Clark is another with high potential, mostly coming from the fact that he is developing his game as a point guard, rather than just a scoring off-guard. He is a long athlete at 6'2 that has a very high basketball IQ and is a really good defender.

On paper the Hoyas have one scholarship to give for 2008 and they have only one senior (Jesse Sapp) on the 2008-2009 roster. It would probably make the most sense for them to hold steady and look to go for some of the best local talent in the 2009 class, especially with their limited scholarships available (of course, expect more to open with Monroe, DeJuan Summers and Austin Freeman as early NBA departure possibilities). Renaldo Woolridge, a top wing in the class of 2008, was on hand this past weekend and the excitement of the Monroe pledge could rub off on him as well. In addition, they Hoyas had 2009 prospects such as Hollis Thompson (CA), Isaiah Armwood and Terrell Vinson of Montrose Christian and Dashonte Riley out of Detroit. Riley has referred to Georgetown as his dream school in the past and with Georgetown so hot, locals like Armwood and Vinson might not be able to wait too long if they want to join the party.

It is sure fun to be a Hoya fan right now...
